Floyd Mayweather is scheduled to return to the MGM Grand for another bout on September 14th after his unanimous defeat of Robert Guerrero last May. All signs point to the highly anticipated fight between Mayweather and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, the 22-year-old unbeaten world super-welterweight champion.
Canelo is coming off of a victory over fellow unbeaten Austin Trout in front of nearly 40,000 fight fans at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The young Mexican star is clearly a massive draw and a matchup would Mayweather would be one of the most eagerly anticipated fights of the year. The fight is not official but comments by promoter Richard Shaefer, and Mayweather himself, point to the fact that the potential bout will happen.
Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO) the young Mexican is a tremendous talent but still very young, is considered the top available threat to Mayweather, who at age 36 is still the best fighter in the world, but inarguably slipping past his peak a bit. Does that and the size advantage for Canelo open us up to the end of Money Mayweather’s reign? It might. And it might not.
It’s good to be a boxing fan tonight, folks. There’s not a lot more to say about it. We’ve got the fight that has been demanded coming to us. It’s going to be a huge, huge event. I am so stoked for this I can’t put it into words just yet.
